Hanging your first lighting truss feels like a leap into the deep end — motors, steels, spans, point loads. It is simpler than it looks once you know which questions to ask, and any decent hire company will answer them before you sign anything.
What is hanging on it?
List every fixture with its weight and hanging position. Four moving heads and a mirror ball behave very differently from a draped soft-goods wash, and the truss size follows the load — not the other way round. Our crew runs the calculation free with every rigging kit hire.
What is holding it up?
- Ground-supported goalposts: confirm floor loadings and level ground
- Flown from a roof: get the venue's rigging plot and rated points in writing
- Outdoors: ask about wind management and ballast, not just sunny-day maths
Who is allowed to build it?
Truss assembly and motor operation belong to competent crew — in practice, that means our riggers or yours with tickets the venue accepts. Budget a half-day build and a half-day derig; rushing steelwork is where schedules and safety both slip. See the full process on our stage and rigging hire page.
