Small stages punish flat white light and reward a little theatre. With four hired fixtures and one clever idea, a 4-metre pub stage can photograph like a festival slot. These are the tricks our lighting techs reach for first.
1. Wash the room, not just the band
Eight battery uplighters around the walls do more for atmosphere than any single stage fixture. Set them to the event colour, keep the stage a touch brighter, and the whole room reads as designed rather than decorated.
2. A whisper of haze
Beams are invisible without something to catch them. One water-based hazer on a low timer turns two Mini Laser Multipoint Beams into a ceiling of light — and photography loves it. Always check the venue's smoke policy first.
3. Keep beams tight and low
- Narrow beam angles read bigger in low ceilings than wide washes
- Cross two beams behind the drummer for instant depth
- Mirror balls still work: one pinspot, endless nostalgia
4 & 5. Sound-active is fine; darkness is a fixture
For DJ-led nights, sound-active mode on a disco rig with remote keeps looks moving with zero operator. And remember blackout moments: killing all light for two beats before a drop makes the return feel twice as big — the cheapest effect in lighting.
